ALBANY — Young minds own the future. And when those young minds create mechanical precision,
that is a thing of beauty. Those concepts have never been more apparent than at Destination Deep Space,
the 2019 Procter & Gamble Peachtree District Qualifier for Georgia FIRST Robotics at the James H. Gray Civic Center
in Albany this weekend. Thirty-plus robotics teams converged on the location to compete for points needed to advance
to various district championships.Event Chairman Jason Beaver said that this year’s competition is the fourth hosted in
Albany. He noted that of the more than 30 teams participating, nine are area teams, including teams from Dougherty and
the surrounding counties of Lee, Worth, Terrell, Calhoun and Tift. The local teams work out at the
Commodore Conyers College & Career Academy in Albany. The 4C Academy, a local charter school, works closely with
industry and business to produce high school graduates who are college- and career-ready.Each of the teams in the
competition is heavily supported by mentors, coaches and volunteers. The teams first meet in January each year. Six weeks
and many late and early hours later, each team will have built a robot to enter into competition. Some teams are rookie teams
and some are multiyear teams, and points are awarded with years of competition as a criteria. Points are also awarded based
on functionality and inspired engineering. Teams are competing to gather points to advance to their respective district championship.
Industry and business are key supporters of the competitions. Future technology controls research and development, which are vital
to tomorrow’s profits and business viability. Manufacturing and business leaders have exhibited an understanding that this country’s
youth is an asset to encourage and support.
